The cosiest outdoor pallet sofa

With a soft cushion for your pallet sofa, you get a bit of a rough and simple sofa environment at a reasonable price - and you can put your own personal touch on it by sewing covers in your favorite colors and patterns.

Search for "pallet cushion" to get your hands on a free sewing pattern, or find inspiration from our lounge chair (item no. 9035700).

We can agree that it's nice to sit outside during summertime (sometimes mostly if the terrace is covered and heated, but that's another story).

A good mattress for your pallet sofa

One of the most important elements of a comfortable pallet sofa is the mattress. It simply has to be soft enough to make you and your friends want to lounge and hang out.

This pallet cushion fits perfectly on a EUR pallet sized 80x120 cm with a thickness of 10 cm. And it's exactly those 10 cm that make the difference. You get a stable and firm mattress which holds it shape and with high recovery capacity combined with just the right level of softness to makes you want to stay seated.

It is OEKO-TEX® certified cold foam, which means that it is dimensionally stable with good recovery. Cold foam is widely used in the furniture industry precisely because it has a high level of sitting and lying comfort - which is why it's also brilliant for your pallet sofa. And of course it's not treated with flame retardants.

It has a density of 35, so it's both soft and comfortable. The hardness is 150 N.

Choose the right foam hardness

Foam is not just foam. Once you've spent hours sewing the best-looking cover for your project, you need to choose the right foam to put inside.

The hardness of foam is called Newton (N). The higher the Newton, the harder the foam. You can assume that a foam with 100 N or less is soft, around 140 N is medium soft and more than 160 N is hard.

Naturally, your creative project and ideas will determine which hardness to choose, but as a starting point we recommend:

  • 80-130 N for back cushions, bed frames and similar
  • 110-160 N for sleeping mattresses
  • 130-200 N for seat cushions for chairs, sofas and the like
