Materials for Spring Knitting
The warmer weather calls for thinner yarns made from beautiful natural fibres that feel light and comfortable against the skin while remaining breathable.
There are many wonderful materials to choose from – and you don’t need to be wary of using wool blends!
Cotton
Classic cotton yarns are an excellent choice for lightweight blouses, cardigans, and T-shirts, as they are breathable and do not provide insulation or warmth. 100% cotton is not very elastic, so make sure your knitting pattern is suitable for this type of yarn. Alternatively, opt for a more elastic cotton blend.

Cotton/Merino
Countless yarn blends combine different fibres to harness the best qualities of each type.
A hugely popular blend for spring knitting is the combination of cotton and merino wool. This creates a lighter, more airy, and elastic yarn that is incredibly versatile and can be used for everything from luxuriously soft baby clothes and blankets to a gorgeous summer top or T-shirt.
If you’re looking for cotton/merino blends, we recommend Dale Garn’s Lerke and Lille Lerke.
Bamboo Blends
Yarn made from bamboo fibres is incredibly soft and comfortable to wear, making it perfect for spring knitting projects as it is breathable and does not have the same insulating effect as wool.
Bamboo is typically used in yarn blends, often combined with wool, cotton, silk, or acrylic, depending on the desired properties of the yarn. If you choose a bamboo/silk blend, you get a luxurious and exquisite yarn that combines bamboo’s natural softness and breathability with silk’s glossy sheen and beautiful texture. Check out our Fraya Thoughtful, made of 70% bamboo and 30% silk.
Mohair
If you want a fluffy and ultra-light look for your knitting project, opt for a pattern that recommends mohair blends, such as silk mohair. Silk mohair is often used as a companion thread, but you can certainly knit with it alone – using one or multiple strands.
Mohair blends come in a wide variety, with the fine, lightweight fibres often mixed with wool, silk, or synthetic fibres. Explore our full range of mohair blends here.
