Let Halloween begin at the front door. With simple materials like tulle, cotton fabric, felt and a little paint, you can quickly create a Halloween look with plenty of impact.
And it doesn’t have to be difficult or take all weekend to get your home ready.

01 · Halloween wreath
Eyes on the door
Tie strips of tulle closely around a polystyrene wreath and let them stick out a little for a fun, tousled look. Draw eyes and tiny blood vessels on polystyrene balls with a marker pen, then tuck them between the tulle or glue them in place.
Finish with a ribbon for hanging. Now someone’s keeping an eye on your Halloween guests.
02 · Pumpkin curtain
Let your guests in through the pumpkin
Use orange cotton fabric as an affordable base and paint on a large, spooky pumpkin face in black. If the curtain won’t need washing, acrylic paint works perfectly. Otherwise, we recommend fabric paint.
Prefer to skip the painting? Cut the face from black cotton fabric or felt and attach the pieces with fabric glue.
03 · Large ghosts
Let the ghosts move into the garden
Cut approx. 1 x 1 m of white cotton fabric for each ghost and drape it diagonally over a small balloon or ball. This gives you a nice point at the bottom and enough fabric at the sides for arms. Make them bigger or smaller if you like.
Paint on eyes and a mouth with black fabric paint. Once the paint is fixed, it’s water-resistant, perfect if your ghosts are staying outdoors for a while.
Tie the fabric at the head with a piece of string, then lift each arm with a separate string. Hang a few together in a hedge or tree to create your own little ghostly gang.
04 · Little ghosts
Create your own little ghostly gang
Make the little ghosts just like the larger ones, only without arms. Cut smaller pieces of white cotton fabric, place a small balloon or ball underneath and paint on eyes and a mouth with black fabric paint.
Tie a piece of string around the head and hang the ghosts in a hedge or tree. Make them in different sizes to create your own little ghostly gang.
05 · Ghost table
Home of the Halloween sweets
Make the sweet table part of your Halloween decorations. Cut a large circle of white cotton fabric and drape it over a small table like a friendly ghost. It works just as well on a square table.
Cut eyes and a mouth from black felt and glue them onto the fabric. Or simply paint the face with black fabric paint.
Fill the table with Halloween sweets and leave it by the door for little trick-or-treaters. Perfect when you don’t quite make it to the door.

Sew a simple trick-or-treat bag in white fleece and give it a ghostly face with eyes cut from black felt. Cut an opening for the mouth so the sweets go straight into the bag.
Add a handle and your little trick-or-treater is ready to head from door to door.
Which fabric is best for Halloween costumes?
Fleece is warm on chilly autumn evenings and doesn’t fray, so there’s no need to finish the edges. Pretty handy when your little one decides at the very last minute that the vampire costume simply has to be a dragon.
Cotton fabric and lining fabric are affordable options in plenty of colours, while tulle adds the drama. Find your favourite below.

04 · Halloween table setting
Set the table for the whole gang
Halloween is the perfect excuse to gather around the table. Invite the family for dinner, friends for a Halloween party or the children and their friends for dressing up, laughter and a little too much sweet stuff.
With fabric, tulle, pumpkins and homemade decorations, it’s easy to create a table with plenty of impact. Go for classic orange and black, keep it simple in black and white, or let the children take care of the decorations.
