Children’s dress with tiered skirt and ruffles

A super-cute dress for everyday wear and special occasions!

The pattern includes three variations, all featuring the same beautiful skirt: a gathered tiered skirt that creates a lovely drape and plenty of fullness. The difference between the styles is in the bodice.

Choose the long-sleeved version, where the sleeves are finished with elastic at the wrists to create a pretty little ruffled edge. Both the front and back are decorated with ruffles that extend slightly over the shoulders, giving the dress an extra-sweet look. You can also choose a sleeveless version with the same beautiful ruffle at the front and back, extending slightly over the shoulder. Finally, there is a summery version with a simple bodice and narrow shoulder straps.

Whichever version you choose, your child will have a lovely dress with plenty of freedom of movement for dancing, playing and relaxing.

Fabric

Quality is important when choosing fabrics for children’s clothing. We recommend choosing a soft, breathable material that can be machine washed.

For this dress, we love lightweight fabrics such as viscose, broderie anglaise and lightweight cotton, available in many beautiful colours and different prints. The style is also perfect for seersucker, where the fabric’s unique texture works beautifully with the ruffles and gathering. Lightweight linen is another great choice, giving the dress a look that is both classic and modern.

This pattern is designed for fabrics without stretch; you can also use stretch fabrics for a more relaxed expression.

Material consumption

The quick overview:

For the three dresses, simply choose your favourite fabric, lightweight fusible interfacing, e.g. 9561, 5 mm elastic for style A, and a small decorative button for styles A and B.

Find the consumption in the table under the images in the left menu on the page.

The calculated fabric consumption is for fabric width 130 cm.

When we calculate the material consumption, we always place the pattern parts so that they face the same way on the fabric to take into account pile direction, pattern reports, etc. Also remember that the recommended length depends on the width of the chosen fabric.

Fit & style

Children’s dress with a regular fit and gathered tiered skirt. Choose between three styles: a long-sleeved bodice with elastic at the wrists or a sleeveless bodice – both with ruffles on the front and back and a button fastening at the back – or a simple bodice with shoulder straps. If you want to know more about which techniques you need to use for this pattern, you will get the full overview in the online sewing instructions, which you will find in the section "Complete instructions" further down the page.
