Tips and tricks for sewing stretch jersey
How to care for stretch jersey
Always follow the washing instructions for each fabric to help maintain both elasticity and fit.
- Washing: Wash at 30–40 °C on a normal or gentle cycle. Wash the fabric before cutting, as it may shrink slightly. After sewing, you can wash the garment inside out to protect both colour and elasticity.
- Drying: Air dry to maintain stretch and shape. Avoid tumble drying, as heat can weaken the elastane fibres and make the fabric less elastic.
- Ironing: Iron at a low temperature on the reverse side. Stretch jersey with elastane does not tolerate high heat, as it can damage the elasticity and affect the fit.

Tips and tricks: How to sew stretch jersey
Stretch jersey with a high elastane content offers extra stretch and a more flexible fit. This also means the fabric reacts more to pulling and tension than regular jersey. With the right settings and a bit of preparation, it is easy to work with, and the result is both comfortable and long-lasting.
| #1 |
Needle Use a stretch needle (ballpoint). It is designed for fabrics with elastane and reduces the risk of skipped stitches, especially when the fabric is stretched a lot. |
| #2 |
Stitches Sew with elastic stitches such as a narrow zigzag, three-step zigzag or overlock. Stretch jersey requires seams that can stretch, otherwise they may break during use. |
| #3 |
Thread Use standard polyester thread. It has slight flexibility and is strong enough to follow the fabric’s movement. |
| #4 |
Stabilising Use a lightweight stretch interfacing and shoulder tape, for example at shoulders, necklines and closures. This is especially important for stretch jersey with elastane, as the fabric may otherwise lose shape over time. |
| #5 |
Thread tension Lower the thread tension slightly. Too much tension can cause the seam to pucker or break when the fabric is stretched. |
| #6 |
Overlocker An overlocker is ideal for stretch jersey. It sews and finishes the seam at the same time, creating an elastic and durable finish. Adjust the differential feed if the fabric waves while sewing. |
| #7 |
Additional tips Sew steadily without pulling the fabric. Stretch jersey with elastane reacts quickly to tension and can become distorted if handled too roughly. Adjust the presser foot pressure if needed, and always test your settings on a fabric scrap first. |
