What is cheese cloth?

Food-contact-safe cheesecloth ideal for cheese making, straining, filtering, jam and marmalade making, cooking, and food preparation. The name originates from the fabric’s traditional use for wrapping and shaping cheese, where the loose weave allowed the cheese to breathe while maturing. Today, cheesecloth is still widely used in the kitchen — for example as a natural sieve when making jam and marmalade — but it is also popular for a variety of creative home projects.

Some more details

The fabric consists of 100% cotton and measures 105 cm in width. You choose the length you order, but note that it will shrink by 25% when washed.

When you start sewing, we recommend using a universal needle size 60. 

Here are some extra steps you can take to remove the (completely natural) scent:

1. Vinegar soak (clear household vinegar or white vinegar)

Vinegar dissolves natural oils and neutralizes acidic odors.

• Mix 1 part clear vinegar with 4 parts cold or lukewarm water.

• Soak the cotton for 30–60 minutes.

• Rinse thoroughly afterwards, then wash as usual.

The vinegar smell will disappear once the fabric dries.

2. Air drying

• Ensure good air circulation — for example, outdoors or on a rack near an open window.

3. Repeated washing

Unbleached cotton may need 2–3 washes before the natural plant scent disappears completely.

• Use a mild detergent and, if desired, a little clear household vinegar in the rinse cycle.

• Avoid fabric softener, as it can “lock in” odors in the fibers.
