4 Tips for Combining Yarn Qualities
- Go up a needle size
When knitting with two or more strands, your fabric will naturally become thicker. Increase your needle size by 0.5–1.0 mm compared to the recommended size for the thickest yarn. - Always knit a swatch
Cast on about 10–15 more stitches than the gauge recommendation for the thickest yarn, and measure both width and height after washing – that way, you'll know what to expect from your finished piece. - Assess the stitch definition
Once your swatch is washed, dried, and optionally blocked, take a close look at the stitch definition. If the fabric feels too loose or too dense, consider adjusting your needle size or trying a different yarn combination. - Check fibre content and care instructions
Always follow the care instructions for the most delicate yarn in your project. For example, if one yarn is machine washable but the other needs handwashing, handwash your finished piece to be safe.
