1- In the example below, we made the ruffle with a finished width of 4 cm using 15 mm wide elastic and pattern no. 23168 - C. Elastic: Measure the length of the strap in your pattern. Cut 2 lengths of elastic at the length measured.
2- Fabric: Cut 2 pieces of fabric, each measuring the strap length x 1.7 e.g. 34 cm x 1.7 = 57.8 cm. If you want to make a 4cm wide ruffle (finished width), you should cut the fabric 10 cm wide. Alternative widths: 7 cm wide ruffle with 25 mm wide elastic = 16 cm 11 cm wide ruffle with 35 mm wide elastic = 24 cm
3- Fold the strap in half lengthwise right sides together. Stitch (1 cm seam allowance).
4- Press the seam flat.
5- Turn strap to the right side. Press. The notch should fit over the stitched seam.
6- Sew 2 lines of stitching to form a channel. The channel should be wide enough for the elastic. If necessary, use a marker pen or chalk to mark half the elastic width on each side of the stitched seam.
7- Pull the elastic through the channel. Gather the fabric to the length of the elastic.
8- Pin the strap onto the garment before sewing the facing (if any). Try on the garment to check the strap length. Adjust the length by pulling the elastic shorter.
9- When you have found the correct length, pin the elastic to the garment. Sew the ends of the elastic 0.5 cm from the edge of the strap.
10- Sew the straps onto the front. NB: Make sure that the stitched seam is facing upwards.
11- Sew the straps onto the back. NB: Make sure that the stitched seam is facing upwards.
12- If your garment has facings, pin and sew these to the garment. Finish sewing the garment in accordance with the sewing instructions.
