Choosing fabric for cushions
When choosing fabric for your cushions, it is not just about colours and patterns. It is also about how your cushions will be used in everyday life. Will they stay outside all summer, or be brought in after use? Do they need to handle a bit of everything, or is it most important that they feel soft and comfortable to sit on?
To make your choice easier, there are three things worth keeping in mind:

Durability
If your cushions are used often, it is a good idea to choose a durable fabric that keeps its look over time. This allows you to use them again and again without compromising on style. Look for fabrics with a high Martindale rating.Martindale measures how well a fabric resists wear. The higher the number, the better it handles everyday use.

Colour fastness
If your cushions are placed in the sun, it is worth choosing a fabric that holds its colour well. This way, you can enjoy the same look even after many sunny days. Look for fabrics with high colour fastness.Colour fastness indicates how well a fabric retains its colour when exposed to direct sunlight.

Water resistance
Outdoor life is unpredictable. Morning dew, a summer shower or a spilled drink. It happens. That is why it is practical to choose a fabric that repels water or dries quickly.Synthetic fibres are especially suitable for this, as they do not absorb much moisture. Also consider how the fabric feels against the skin.
If you are unsure what suits you best, think about how you want to use your outdoor space. If you want to leave your cushions outside, more robust and weather-resistant fabrics are a good choice. If you prefer a softer and more relaxed look, you can choose more freely and simply bring the cushions inside when the day ends.
There is no single right choice. It is about finding the fabric that fits your moments.
The best fabric for cushions
In principle, you can sew cushions from most upholstery fabrics. However, with durability, water resistance and colour fastness in mind, we especially recommend the following categories:
Canvas
Canvas is a durable and versatile choice that works well for cushions used frequently. The tight weave makes the fabric strong, and if you choose an outdoor version, it will also resist sun and moisture. A great option if you want cushions that can stay as a permanent part of your outdoor space.
Half panama
Half panama has a firm structure that creates a soft and lively look. It is a good choice for cosy corners where atmosphere matters. The fabric is not water-repellent, so it is best brought indoors after use. In return, you get great freedom when choosing colours and patterns.
Dralon®
Dralon® is designed for outdoor use and combines durability with comfort. The fabric is both water-repellent and UV-resistant, helping colours stay vibrant over time. At the same time, it feels soft and comfortable to sit on.
Upholstery fabric
Structured upholstery fabric is a strong choice for cushions that need to handle everyday use. It offers high durability and a firm surface that works well for daily wear. Often made from polyester, it also keeps its colour well in sunlight. A great option if you prefer a simple look with a focus on durability.

Filling for cushions
Foam and polyester filling are best suited for outdoor use, as they dry quickly and do not develop mould. Consider adding a zip or velcro closure so you can easily wash your cushion covers when needed.
