Find the yarn for your socks

Soft, colourful, classic or extra cosy? The yarn helps give your socks exactly the look and feel you have in mind.

For socks, it’s a good idea to choose a yarn that can stand up to being worn again and again. That’s why many sock yarns combine wool with polyamide, which makes the yarn more hard-wearing while the wool keeps your feet lovely and warm.

Start with the pattern, find the colours you love and choose a yarn that suits your project. You’re already well on your way to a new favourite pair.

Little tip: Socks certainly don’t have to be one colour. Play with stripes, contrasting colours on the heel and toe or similar details. It’s your project, so you decide.

Double-pointed needles or circular needles? You decide

Socks are knitted in the round, and double-pointed needles are the classic choice. With double-pointed needles, you divide the stitches between several needles and knit in the round as your socks slowly take shape.

If you’re already comfortable with double-pointed needles, simply find the size that suits your pattern and get started.

Magic Loop: if you’d rather skip the double-pointed needles

If the thought of juggling five needles at once doesn’t exactly have you reaching for your yarn basket, don’t worry. There are other ways ♥︎

You can knit your socks on a circular needle using the Magic Loop technique. Here you use a long circular needle (at least 80cm), divide the stitches into two equal sections and bend the cable so you can knit in the round.

It may take a couple of rounds before the technique starts to feel natural. But once you get the hang of it, Magic Loop is a lovely method for everything from socks to sleeves and other small projects that are knitted in the round.

Choose a circular needle in the size recommended by the pattern and give it a go. You might just find yourself joining the club of knitters who prefer knitting socks on circular needles.
